Undavali Caves is located about 10 kms from Vijaywada on the
way from Vijaywada to Amaravati. These caves are constructed by the side of a
hill. As per the archeological department, the caves were 1500 years old. Those
were constructed during 6th and 7th century. The original
caves were Buddhist caves which were used for resting. Later the caves were
modified by hindus. The main temple is dedicated to Ananta sayana, the sleeping
Vishnu. You can see sculptures in the caves a combination o f Hinduism,
Buddhism and Jainism constructed during fifth to seventh century. There are
four stories of caves and you can climb safely from one story to another
through steps. It is a thrilling experience to climb the caves on the hill. It
was a tiring day and the bus journey from Vijaywada was painful. My mom was
feeling sick and could not climb much of the hills. After visiting the caves we
returned back to Vijaywada.
