Revisiting Sankey Tank in Banglore

Sankey tank is a huge man made lake in Bangalore covering an
area of about 37 acres. The widest part of the tank is about 800 meters. Apart
from the lake there is a beautiful park around it maintained by Bangalore
Mahanagara Palike. Sankey tank was constructed by Richard Sankey of Madras
regiment in 1882 to provide drinking water in Bangalore. But it could not be
used as the water quality of the tank was not good for drinking purposes. Later
during recent years the tank was converted to a lake by Bangalore Mahanagar
Palike. This lake is also called as Gandhadhakatikere as the Govt sandalwood
depot is there near the place. This lake used for Ganesh Idol Visharjan during
Ganesh Puja times. There are also some free yoga classes there during morning
times. This place is about 6 kms from our residence and we have visited this
place several times. Many local people come here regularly for walking
purposes.
