Mecca Masjid or Macca Masjid is one of the oldest and most
important Masjids of Hyderabad. The construction of Mecca Masjid was started by
Mohd Quli Qutb Shah but completed much later by Aurangzeb, when Aurangzeb
conquered Hyderabad. At the left side of the entrance of Mecca Masjid there are
tombs of various rulers of Hyderabad. The main prayer hall of the Masjid is
very large, 75 feet high, 220 ft wide and 180 ft long, which is as big as to
accommodate 10,000 people during the prayer. The huge courtyard of the Masjid
is one of the most beautiful place in the whole campus. There is also a beautiful
pond in front of the Masjid. The water of this pond is considered to be holy.
People wash their hands and face with this holy water. You can see thousands of
pigeons in front of the Masjid. The birds are attracted by the water in the
pond and food grains offered by the visitors. People feed rice and other grains
to the birds as a part of their religious tradition.
