From Gateway of India we took a boat for Elephanta caves. Shankar could not go with us as he had other works. Unexpectedly I discovered my close friend Ramesh and his family in the boat. It was such a pleasant surprise. They were also going to Elephanta caves. The journey to Elephanta was really enjoyable.
Elephanta is a small island about 10 kms from Mumbai coast in the Arabian Sea. The boat took about half an hour. After getting down from the boat one has to take a toy train or go by walk for about 300 mtrs to the cave. As the toy train goes after an interval we preferred to go by walk. There are many caves and ancient sculptures inside the caves. We spent around 2 hours and could see only part of it. Visitin the the places around the caves in the island may take a full day. It is a must see for any tourist going to Mumbai.
During our return journey from Elephanta, we paid some extra money to the ferry to sit on the roof of the boat. We could see hundreds of eagles flying near the boat. The boatman was throwing grains to attract the eagles. That scenery was quite interesting. It was almost evening by the time we reached Mumbai coast at the Gateway of India
