Visiting Matheran – The Eco-sensitive Hillstation near Mumbai

Matheran is an Eco-sensitive hill station in Maharastra about 100 kms from Mumbai and 120 kms from Pune. It is situated about 800 meters above sea level on Sahayadri hills. From Mumbai we went Neral by a local train. From Neral there is a special narrow gauge toy train to Matheran which usually does not operate. From Neral we went upto the hill by a shared taxi (Busses and bigger vehicles don’t go to the hill).

This is a declared as an eco-sensitive place. You cannot see any motor vehicles on top of the hill as all kinds of motor vechiles are banned on top of the hill. One has to either take a horse or go by walk to visit different tourist points on Matheran. However, I could feel lot of dusts there on the hill because of dry soil and lack of proper roads.

There are more than a dozen interesting points on top of the hill. (A longer list shows more than 30 points to see). We first went to the panorama point, then Nigam’s point, heart point, Monkey point, Sunset point, Paymaster Park and finally echo point. We were pretty tired by walking and walking. However the day was interesting and adventurous.
