Gangotri Album

Gangotri is situated high on Himalayas about 3200 meters above sea level. The place is near Gomukh glacier where the river Ganga origins. Gangotri is famous for Gangamata Temple where the river Ganga is worshiped as a Goddess. Because of cold climate the temple remains closed for six months during winter. During winter the whole area remains covered with ice. Nobody lives here during winter. The residents move away to places like Uttarkashi situated at lower altitude. The goddess in Gangotri temple also moves to Uttarkashi. The temple opens on Akhyaya Tritiya for six months during the summer. Tourists start flowing during summer six months.

The river Ganga in Gangotri is named as Bhagirathi. As the water flows from melting of ice the water of the river is extremely cold. We took a bath in the river with extreme difficulty. The body was like freezing when coming in contact with water. The current of water was also very high. It is prohibited to swim in the river as it can be extremely fatal because of high current and ice cold temperature. We also visited other interesting places like suryakunda, gourikunda and Gourisila. Suryakunda is a massive waterfall. We saw many apple orchards around Gangotri.
